Wes Thomason

My name is Wes Thomason and I am a second year at Eugene Lang College at The New School. I am double majoring in Politics and Interdisciplinary Science. I was introduced to research with Dr. Smyth while taking Microbial Ecologies Spring of 2019 and through working as a lab assistant at the New School. Over the course of the summer in the Smyth Lab I focused on the biodiversity of the soil microbiome in New York City. We sampled soil from various locations at Eugene Lang College, the University Center green roof, and Union Square. These samples were tested for bacterial natural products that display antibiotic properties as well as the effect of varying amounts of water saturation on the soil microbial counts. I plan to continue research in the Smyth lab through the fall in Advanced Microbiology Research.
